CMO Executive Meetings | Build a Growth CadenceSkip to content

Executive Meetings CMOs Should Consistently Own

Use five decision forums to connect customer strategy, revenue performance, investment governance, portfolio choices, and board preparation across the executive team.

Benchmark Your Marketing Download the Guide

Direct Answer

CMOs should consistently own five executive decision forums: growth strategy, revenue engine, investment and measurement, customer and portfolio, and board pre-wire. Each forum needs a charter, governed scorecard, decisions, and follow-through. Only 38% of senior executives say their CMO collaborates effectively with peers.

Five Executive Interlocks CMOs Should Own

Align customer and growth choices with the CEO.
Govern pipeline quality and conversion with the CRO.
Review investment economics and evidence with the CFO.
Connect customer insight to product and retention decisions.
Pre-wire board narratives, risks, and recommendations early.

Own Decision Forums, Not Status Meetings

The CMO should not own every executive meeting. The role should own the forums where customer insight, market choices, demand, investment, and revenue performance must be integrated into decisions. A monthly CEO growth strategy review aligns customer priorities, market shifts, and enterprise tradeoffs. A weekly or biweekly revenue engine review with the CRO addresses pipeline quality, conversion, velocity, and sales-marketing commitments.

A monthly CFO investment and measurement review should reconcile definitions, forecast ranges, budget variance, payback, and portfolio reallocation. A customer and portfolio council with Product and Customer Success connects research, usage, retention, roadmap, launches, and commercial capacity. Before board meetings, the CMO should pre-wire the CEO and CFO on performance drivers, material risks, and the decision narrative so there are no surprises.

Ownership means defining the charter, preparing the pre-read, maintaining the scorecard, framing decisions, documenting owners, and closing the loop. Status updates belong asynchronously. McKinsey reports that companies involving marketing executives in strategic planning achieve 1.4 times higher top-line performance, reinforcing why the CMO must be embedded in the forums where growth choices are made.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should the CMO personally chair every meeting?

No. The CMO should own or co-own the charter, evidence, and decisions when marketing has distinct accountability. Another executive may facilitate when the outcome sits elsewhere.

How long should executive marketing meetings be?

Weekly operating reviews usually need 30 to 60 minutes. Monthly decision forums may need 60 to 90 minutes, while quarterly strategy reviews require more time.

What belongs in the pre-read?

Include the decision required, scorecard, material variances, customer or market evidence, assumptions, risks, options, and a recommendation. Avoid activity summaries without implications.

Which meetings should be eliminated?

Eliminate meetings that only repeat dashboards, lack decision authority, produce no owners, or duplicate another forum. Move status communication to an asynchronous update.

How should meeting decisions be tracked?

Maintain a decision log with the choice, rationale, owner, due date, affected metrics, and review point. Carry unresolved actions into the next relevant forum.
